Tip for July 25, 2008 - What's scaring you right now?
The news of the recession, rising gas prices, global warming, and terrorism is just scaring everyone! One of the most interesting attributes of fear is that it gets us to behave in ways that are not often in our best interests or the interests of those that we love and care about. Our flight/fight response is an important aspect of who we are and helps us know when it is safe or not to take action, move closer, or get away from a dangerous situation. However, our brains can be tricked and then that response may not be so useful.
So, when you WATCH the news and look at the world situation and
your find yourself getting scared, nervous etc., you are actually setting off
your own flight/fight mechanism. This then sends stress hormones, like
cortisol and norepinephrine, through your body which are really poison for your
system. This is a time to use our circumstances as a way of training our relaxation response - to sooth our flight/fight system so that we can make intuitive, rational choices.
If you don't know how to relax and sooth yourself go and invest in learning how. Don't let fear be your guide. Instead, let inspiration be your guide!
