Tip for February 8, 2008 - Attitudes can Suck, Shift can happen!
Your attitude sucks, now what?
What is attitude?
How is our attitude created?
What can we do about our attitude if our attitude sucks?
Attitude in your life, in love and in your livelihood is that
place from which you come. It is what you bring to the table of your
life. It is a certain set of lenses by which we evaluate the experiences
of our lives. It is our perspective.
For instance, if you were looking at a car close up it
would appear one way and if you were looking at the same car from a high flying
airplane it would look quite different. Same car, different
perspective. It is by changing our perspective or vantage point that makes
our life more interesting, more rich and far less painful!
So what is your perspective, your attitude? Is your glass half
empty, half full, or just too small?
Knowing your perspective is key to increasing your awareness and
your range.
So how is this attitude, this perspective formed?
Well some of it is your early life experience, your cultural
background, your parents and family.
If you are having a challenging time of life, you probably have
felt that way for a long long time and are pretty used to it by now and, while
it may not be so comfortable, it is known and therefore more comfortable than
the unknown.
Making a shift in attitude, in perspective, means that you are
making changes to who you are and how you think. Changes in the direction
you habitually take. So if you are trying to make changes, focus on making
internal shifts instead. Remember, when you shift the programming, the
behavior automatically and effortlessly changes.
My favorate example of this is in some people's constant
need to lose weight.
They always start the same way - they create rules.
They say things like...
1. I will stop eating sugar. 2. No eating after
7:00PM. 3. I will only eat foods that I know are good for
me. 4. I will go to the gym 3 times per week.
Now while all of these sound reasonable, they don't make a shift
on the inside.
So what does shifting look like?
Making these kinds of statements will help you make the shift.
1. Who I am is someone who takes care of my body.
2. I am someone who surrounds myself with people who take care of
themselves. 3. My day orients around my well-being and
exercise. 4. I've got better things to do than eat toxic
food. 5. I need my energy to accomplish my goals.
So while you can get some information about yourself based on the
changes you would like to make, it will not be as effective or evolutionary as
making shifts and focusing on who you are and what you want in your life!
Many blessings,
Dr. E
